No one wants to admit it, but we all fear it. It’s a totally normal thing, especially when you can’t seem to find any rest and relaxation time throughout the week. Creative burnout is something that is hard to talk about. Outsiders have a hard time grasping just what it feels like, and even your close friends might think you’re overreacting. But most of the time, creative burnout feels like there’s a weight on your chest, and you can feel the pressure being piled up higher and higher every day.
When you’re in the thick of it, it’s difficult to see the way out. It feels like there’s no hope. But what if we told you that there are a few easy fixes to keep you working towards your goals instead of burning yourself out? Learn how to overcome creative burnout before you get shut down for good.
What’s Going on, Why I Am Feeling This Way?
Okay…so you’re having a rough day. You don’t want to create, and it feels like there’s no possible way to fix it. You don’t want to solve the problem because you’re too busy feeling the feelings that your brain is throwing at you.
So before you can begin to create again, you have to figure out what’s making you feel that way. Ask yourself what’s really bothering you and see if there’s a way to dig deeper.
Are you finding it hard to get work done? Do you feel like you’re repeating yourself? Are you struggling to come up with new ideas? Are you feeling overwhelmed by life, work, and art? Do you feel discouraged?
When you look at these options, it’s pretty clear that they’d all work differently! Think about it with a friend or in a journal. The quicker you identify what is going on, the faster you can return to your passion.
Let Go of the Shame and Move on
This is something that we’ve all experienced. We’re proud of our creative abilities and claim them as a part of who we are as individuals. But what happens when it comes to something that we create, put a lot of time, effort, and thought into — and then…well, nothing? It can be difficult to let go of the shame or embarrassment when this happens and to keep going.
A creative block, that’s what it’s called. And if you’ve ever had one, you probably re-focused the blame on yourself, which is the worst thing you can do. You see, creativity is not our sole identity – it’s just a part of who we are. So if you’re not creating – it’s not the end of the world!
You can always get back in shape. Creativity is a process, so don’t be discouraged if you feel stuck sometimes. Remember that it’s perfectly normal to burn out from time to time, but no matter how you feel, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel! You might feel stuck or uninspired at times, but know that you’ll always come out of it. The key is to keep yourself away from getting discouraged.
Give Yourself Some Breaks
Artists often have a hard time accepting their work. They tend to doubt their abilities and hate seeing how a piece comes together until the very end. And art perfectionism can play a great role in this because once you’ve finished it, you feel like it’s not as good as it could be.
Like any other muscle, your creative brain needs a break. If you don’t give yourself some time to relax, recharge your batteries, and release the tension in your mind, you will walk around tense with a headache or sore neck.
As much as you want to be productive, you should also take it easy sometimes. So, let yourself rest and enjoy some of the fruits of your labor.
Being able to overcome creative burnout takes practice and some extra focus, but it is doable. The rewards you reap from pulling through your creativity blocks will be well worth the effort. Got any tips for increasing your creativity? Share them with us in the comments!
